“Draw new to God, and he will draw near to you.” ~ James 4:8

It is past time that we get excited about God and serve Him with excitement. Speaking from personal experience, I admit that there are times when I drag my feet to the Bible. Or, look at the clock to see if I’ve spent enough time reading so that I can move on to other activities.

Why do we treat spending time with God like an undesirable chore? I know I’m not the only one. Why do we look forward to everything else in our lives more than we do to spending time with our Creator!

How to Get Excited About God

The first step towards developing genuine excitement about God is investing time into building a strong relationship with Him.

And then…you need to stay the course and build your spiritual stamina.

Most things in our lives give us immediate gratification. If I go make a sandwich, I’m immediately satisfied afterward when I get to devour it. If I go shopping, I get to go home with something shiny immediately after.

But building a relationship with God is gradual. You don’t sit down, read one scripture, say one prayer, and then suddenly know all there is to know about our Ancient Father.

Building your spiritual stamina will help you stay excited about God.

It’s about endurance. Long term relationships are about endurance. You invest in time, and slowly and eventually, you get closer to a person. That’s how we must treat our relationship with the Lord.

God is the most important relationship you will ever invest your time in.

If you think about it, most things that give us immediate gratification are short-lived and temporary.

Like the example of the sandwich. It was quick to make, but it was also quick to eat, and then it’s gone. When you go shopping, it doesn’t take long to swipe that card. But after a few weeks, the value of that item diminishes, and you’re back at the shopping center looking for the next shiny item to purchase.

Well, God isn’t a clothing item, new toy, or a sandwich. We have to invest in REAL, QUALITY time in order to get the spiritual gratification that we are seeking. Only by investing true, quality time will we begin to see a change in our hearts and start to get excited about God!

A relationship with our Father is much more valuable than anything else on this earth that we possess. God’s will or plan for us is to enter into an everlasting relationship with Him, and that requires a level of commitment that, unfortunately, a lot of people are not willing to make.

I don’t know about you, but I’m excited about this everlasting relationship. And I am excited about what God is doing in my life.

I know that most of us have a zillion responsibilities. We have full-time jobs, kids, and a plethora of other commitments in our lives.

And for some reason, God is usually at the bottom of that priority list. We say, once I get done with dropping the kids off, I’m going to read the bible. Then that quickly turns into “after I make dinner, I’ll finally have time.” And then the excuses continue, until finally, the day is over and you’re literally too tired to focus on the words on the page or put together a coherent enough sentence to pray.

What I have found to be true, especially as a new mom to a 11-month-old, is there will NEVER be enough time. EVER. So, we need to stop hoping that the day will magically find time for us. Just like everything else in our lives, we have to carve out that time. We must make the time to spend with God. If we can make time to do everything else, we can make time for the most important task of the day. The bible says put God first, and the rest will follow:

“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all things will be added to you.” (Mathew 10:38-39).

We get so worried that putting something off will put us behind. We create these master to-do lists that most of the time we cannot even realistically complete, and then rush around trying to finish every task. Then we’re stressed, overwhelmed, and tired because we’re trying to do too much. But the bible says put God first, and everything else falls in place. Can you imagine the peace and rest we could have if we just follow these simple instructions? God wants us to be happy!

What If We Choose to Put God First Every Day?

What would happen? Whether that’s starting the day off in prayer, worship, song, or reading the Word. Or all the above! What if you consistently invested time into your relationship with your heavenly Father? Nothing but good can come from that.

The feelings of excitement might not come right away. Or they may be there some days, but not others.

And that’s okay!

But the key is pushing passed those moments where you just aren’t in the mood to spend time in His presence.

I often hear people say that once they make the decision to put God first, they see major change in their lives. These changes don’t always have to come in the form of something large or tangible. Sometimes it can be as simple as a change in attitude; how you react to circumstances in your life. Crap is bound to happen in life. It’s mostly how we choose to respond that decides how our lives will be affected.

How awesome is it that God invites us to get to know Him? Praise Him!

Jesus has a way of entering the heart and changing our perspectives; softening us to see the world and our situations from a different point of view. Life can be so much better when we allow our Father to work within us and through us.

Life will always have its ups and downs. There will be plenty of trials to face. But why face them alone? Why not invite God into your life, daily! Let him know your troubles. Let him share in the burden. Let him lighten the load. Let him help you through the mess. He can be your strength, your courage, and your joy. We just have to invite him inside our homes.

Do this consistently, and the excitement about God and what He is doing in your life will come!

Work Hard at Being Consistent!

I have good and bad days. Days I forget to pray. Days I neglect reading the Bible. I am not proud of those days. I am hoping that writing this blog will keep me accountable and keep me consistent.

But you know what the best part is. God loves me anyway. God is always there with open arms. He is always welcoming, no matter how much I fall short.

So, let’s look forward to praying, and run to the bible when it’s time to study His Word.  Let’s get excited about the One who gave us breath. Let’s put those prayerless days behind us, and do our absolute best to carve out time for God.

Are you getting excited about God yet?!
